Historical Notes:
The intense design work of Innocenzo Sabbatini for the technical office of the Istituto Case Popolari, chaired by Alberto Calza Bini, opens an important page in the invention and realization of the modern in Rome through linguistic and typological experimentation and research on the theme of popular and special-character housing. In the years between 1927 and 1929, the design and construction of the Alberghi Suburbani in the Città Giardino della Garbatella began, special-character buildings that combine (in the intentions of the original project but partly modified during construction to the point of causing Sabbatini to resign from the ICP on March 7, 1929) temporary and transitory housing with a set of collective functions: canteen, nursery and school, church, laundries and ironing rooms, kitchens, shared toilets, living rooms, outdoor play areas and warehouses. It is Calza Bini who defines them as "transit hotels" intended to host (assist and educate) families evicted from their homes as a result of the demolition works, liberation of monuments and "partial clearance" (Calza Bini, 1930) envisaged by the Governorate's projects for the construction of a renewed monumental and political centre of the city, with a hub in Piazza Venezia to follow, at the end of the 1920s ...
