Castelvecchio di Rocca Barbena: historical notes
This medieval village, part of the Guide of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy since 2007, owes its name to the Castle and the mountain of Rocca Barbena above it (1142 m above sea level).
The castle was built in the 11th century. by the Clavesana family, on the road that connected the Ligurian coast to the first fertile plains of present-day Piedmont, with a military defense function.
Today it is the private property of a Milanese family who restored it in a conservative way to keep its high historical, artistic and cultural value intact.

A walk among the "carrugi"
From the panoramic car park a small road takes us to the heart of the village.
After a downhill stretch we arrive in Piazza della Torre. A beautiful medieval tower stands out in one corner.
One side of the square is almost completely occupied by the Oratory of the Disciplinanti, with the small bell tower and the fresco of Santa Maria Maddalena. Here the meetings of the notables who took decisions relating to the life of the village took place.
In the other corner we find a stone fountain preceded by a portico with stone seats: ideal for taking a break and cooling off. The church dedicated to the Assumption has a beautiful bell tower that seems to merge with the facade, it was built in the late Middle Ages and completely modified inside in Baroque style.
Along the lanes we admire the well-renovated houses and a great variety of views, including suspended passages, steep staircases, small courtyards that hide behind the gates.
At the bottom of a short descent there is a delightful meadow, a natural square overlooked by the parish church with its churchyard and children's games. From the side opposite the church a new postcard view of the castle with the characteristic stone houses surrounded by vines, which in the autumn season are tinged with bright red, orange and dark yellow.

Ilaria's path
A few years ago the ancient pedestrian street between Castelvecchio di Rocca Barbena and Zuccarello was renovated. With an easy walk of about an hour and a half you can follow a pleasant itinerary surrounded by nature but also history. The path in fact touches the ruins of the castle of the Marquises del Carretto di Zuccarello, where the beautiful Ilaria del Carretto lived, who died very young in childbirth and made immortal by the funeral monument sculpted by Jacopo della Quercia.

Curiosity
In the 70s a famous Swedish musician and songwriter, Björn Afzelius, discovered this enchanted village and fell in love with it to the point that he dedicated several songs to it, here are some of his verses:
"Look at that blanket of stars,
Listen, the caresses of the wind!
it's night, it's night in Liguria!
Come, let's sleep outdoors!
The old Castle of Rocca Barbena
it is there waiting for our awakening.
no one will ever know, the things he saw
The old Castle of Rocca Barbena."
